The Birthday Massacre, August 25 @ the Middle East

The Birthday Massacre, August 25….
The Birthday Massacre, my all-time favorite Canadian goth-pop band, just happen to be playing on my actual birthday (August 25) at the Middle East in Cambridge.  This is one of those amazing coincidences that only happens every now and then, and we should celebrate.  They sound like this.  And they look like this.

Not sure what the plans are before/after, although considering that the whole thing was Mikey’s idea, I’m sure said plans involve clean living and, possibly, church*.  However, I’d love to see you all there if you can make it.  Tickets are $15/$17 at the door, and the whole nonsense begins at 9pm.  Me, I’m looking forward to being able to say, fer realz, that I’m a murder tramp birthday boy, and, perhaps, wearing my black and white dress. To the birthday massacre… birthday massacre**.

You wanna go to

*-that was sarcasm.

**-those were song lyrics, not a plan of action.  However, it’s gonna be my birthday and I can dress however the hell I want.

Oh, right. And here’s Chibi, the singer.

As you can see, she’s my kind of gal.

omg fanvids lolz: “Scattered” (Doctor Who)

Di provides us with this intense tribute to David Tennant, aka the Tenth Doctor, to my favorite Muse song, “Map of the Problematique”.   This is scarily good, and even if you don’t know the show, you should check it out.  Lots of explosions and action for the boys, lots of David Tennant for the girls.

Oh yeah… some season three spoilers, but they go by quickly.

zero days…

So, yeah… don’t know where my book is at, but that’s almost okay, because JK Rowling just read me the first chapter.

boogity “deathly hallows” boogity boo

No spoilers here, I’m afraid.  You know why?  Because I do not have my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet.   And do you know why I do not have my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet?

It has nothing to do with Michael DiLoreto of the North End via East Boston turning 25, although he picked a pretty inconvenient day to get born, if you ask me.  No, I would have gone to Mikey’s birthday party if it was infested with sharks.   I do not blame Mikey.

It also has nothing to do with Theatre@First presents Festival@First:C’est Levine! (neither of those things are actually links, however, this is), the final five performances of which are tonight, tomorrow afternoon, and next thursday, friday, and saturday, and in which I am featured prominently being somewhat funny while my co-star Alyssa is brutally, effortlessly, and transcendentally hilarious.   Apropos of nothing, you should stop by, as tickets are a mere $10 and all proceeds go to help save endangered otters in Darfur*.

No, I do not blame you, Theatre@First.  And that’s really not a link either.

No, see, when I look into my personal Mirror of Erised, which is just like the Mirror of Erised in the Harry Potter books except that it’s actually just a mirror with toothpaste spittle all over it, it shows me who I have to blame.  And that person, my friends, is none other than me.

three days….

…until Deathly Hallows, and if you haven’t read this interview with JK Rowling, I recommend you do so.

Upon the release of the last book, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Ms. Rowling granted one interview, which happened to be to Emerson (of Mugglenet) and Melissa (of The Leaky Cauldron and PotterCast.)   That’s right – instead of doing the traditional media circuit, she instead talked to two superfans who have done more to promote and analyze the books than just about anyone alive – such is the power of teh interwebz.

It’s a seriously in depth and fascinating interview, and worth reading.   Here’s Ms. Rowling talking about why she chose Emerson and Melissa.

Oh, right: if you haven’t read Half Blood Prince, then omg spoilers.

four days…

…until the MOST EAGERLY ANTICIPATED, 700-PAGE HUSK OF AWESOMENESS SINCE THE NEW GODDAMN TESTAMENT arrives in the hot little hands of the world’s children and the sad, arrested adults who want to be them.

Count me in.

Meanwhile, here’s some HP goodness, via The Simpsons and YouTube.

…and finally, Ms. Rowling herself makes a brief appearance.

songs you don’t know: Guster, “Parachute”

(also published on

There we stand about to fly

Peeking down over land,

Parachute behind

What was that moment for which we lived

Without a parachute about to dive?

It’s a warm, misty night in Wellesley, MA, July 1995. The campus has been hijacked by hundreds of geeky, freaky, smart, talented teenaged misfits from all over the globe. The girls all seem to be brilliant and beautiful and Jewish and from New Jersey. The boys all seem to be dorky and funny and from everywhere. I’m from about an hour north. My roommate, Sharfie, is from the DC area. My new best friends are from Wisconsin and California and North Carolina and Rhode Island, and by the end of the three-week session I will have a collection of awkwardly scrawled phone numbers and achingly sincere promises to write.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

(big honking spoilers to follow, if you haven’t read/seen it. Be warned.)

I went to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night, but then again, I would.  No, I didn’t dress up, because I wound up going alone and if I’m going to have the snot kicked out of me, I like to have witnesses.  Besides, I’m slightly too old to be a convincing Hogwarts student, and I didn’t feel like distressing and ripping my suit coat to go as Prof. Lupin.   As awesome as Prof. Lupin is.   Dude’s a werewolf, you see.  A nice werewolf.    Anyway, he’s not really in the movie that much.
