it’s coming, part two

21 Sep

Scroll down and read “It’s coming…” part one first.  Then, come back.

Did you happen to click the link?  No?  Well, then – just in case you’re lazy, here’s what’s going on.  There’s a webcomic called XKCD (which bills itself as “a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language”), and one day, the cartoonist told a story of a girl who appeared in a dream and whispered a secret, special message into the ear of the protagonist.  And what message was that?  Well, if you’re the sort of person who draws webcomics, then they’re probably something nerdy.  Like GPS coordinates.

One of XKCD’s enterprising fans entered the coordinates, and worked out that this “event” was set to take place at a real time, at a real location, in the not-too-distant future.  As a matter of fact, this event is supposed to take place Sunday, September 23, at 2:38pm, in Cambridge, MA.   No, really.

So, what does teh interwebs do when faced with such an odd, yet benign, happenstance?  It does what it always does: it creates a livejournal community about it.  And then came the Facebook group, which I can’t find somehow, and before you knew it, there was an honest-to-goodness interwebs phenomenon taking place right here in my own back yard.  People flyin’ in from other countries and shit.  Damn.

Am I going?  Absolutely-on-a-Triscuit I am, because if I missed the nerd rave of the century when it was just a Charlie Card away, I’d never be able to look at myself in the mirror again.  Actually, that’s not true – I’m pretty vain.

The point is….  on Sunday, I’m going, and y’all should go too.   Here’s how you get there from the Alewife T-stop (according to Cos on LJ):

  • Use the North Cambridge exit from the T station. This will be at the opposite end of the stationnot where you want to go. from where you’ll see most people go, because most people who get off there are going to the parking garage or the passenger pick-up/drop-off place, both of which are
  • When you exit, you’ll see Russell Field in front of you, currently full of construction but maybe not by then. Take the path in front of you leading through Russell Field and go to the other end.
  • When you exit Russell Field, you’ll be at the beginning of Harvey Street (or the end, depending on how you want to think of it :). Walk down Harvey for a few blocks…
  • … and when you reach Cedar, turn right, and go one block.

Bring a kite.   Or a tape measure.  One or the other.  We’re not sure exactly.

Heck, bring muffins.
