Yep.

Lauryn, I believe the words you are looking for are: “This is so very wrong, and yet, so very right.”

omg fanvids lolz ^_^: “Ghostbusters”/”Nine Inch Nails”

Perusing io9 this morning, I stumbled upon many interesting things about which I could have blogged.  There’s the ill-advised plan by the producers of the forthcoming G.I.Joe movie to write, direct, and produce a film based on – I kid you not – the ’80s video game Asteroids.   There’s an actual, real-live blob living beneath the city streets of Raleigh, NC, with video to prove it.   And then there’s this: a mash-up of the Nine Inch Nails song “The Hand That Feeds” with the theme from Ghostbusters.

Is this the awesomest thing ever invented by humans?   Yes.  Yes it is.

omg fanvids lolz…sort of: “Camera One”, Josh Joplin Band/Tim Russert

Haven’t written in a while.  Lots has happened in the world, lots has happened with me.  I’m feeling pretty damn overwhelmed by lots of things, so the blog has fallen by the wayside.  Hillary dropped out.  Obama’s the nominee.  McCain continues to scare.  Meanwhile, I moved, helped my girlfriend move, am helming a summer theater festival, am scraping together a musical career, am working full time at a busy job with no internet access, am feeling somewhat put upon.

Then Tim Russert died.  That was weird.

I’m not trying to sound glib, not at all.  It was genuinely weird.  Here’s a guy who, for the last few years at least, has sort of just been there – hosting Meet The Press, showing up on election nights with his whiteboard of delegates, popping up on The Tonight Show to poke fun at himself.  Matter of fact, he was just on The Tonight Show a couple days before he died, with his whiteboard.  Then, he flew to Boston to give the commencement address at his son’s graduation.  Then, he had a heart attack in his office.  Out of nowhere.  Scary.  Strange.

Anyway, apparently, there are news fanboys.  Like I should be shocked, I’m probably one of them.  One of them, AntiConformist911, spliced together a strangely affecting music video tribute to the music of one of my favorite obscure one-hit wonders of 2001, “Camera One” by Josh Joplin Band.   The song, I think, is actually about that guy from Suddenly Susan who died, but it works all right.

You can say what you like about Tim – whether he was easier on his right-wing or left-wing guests is probably a matter of political taste – but you can’t deny that he was a dedicated journalist, a smart guy, a beloved son and father, and someone who was fully able to laugh at himself.  It’s Father’s Day.  Go tell your Dad you love him.

omg fanvids lolz: “The Picard Song”

I am, for the moment, kinda sick of politics. Don’t worry, I’ll get back to the here and now soon enough, but now, here’s a tribute to the greatest Starfleet Captain – nay, the greatest man – of the 24th century; my hero and yours, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

(edit, 11:41am, 2/11/08 – fixed the stupid link so now it works.)

I’m surprised I never posted this here before, it’s really quite addictive.

Someone even nerdier than I has taken the above ditty and remade it using The Sims. This is particularly worth watching, if only to see your Star Trek: TNG friends bustin’ a phat move.

niiice! christmas/omg fanvids lolz: “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”/”Heaven” by Bryan Adams

Whilst putting together my post on “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, one of the most beloved holiday specials of all time ever, I stumbled across the following (choose one: travesty/piece of brilliance). It’s… how do I even say this… it’s an OTP ship* vid for Rudolph and Clarice, set to a cover of “Heaven” by Bryan Adams.  I really, really wish I (choose one: had thought of it/hadn’t seen it at all.)

LunaCavity is responsible for (choose one: crafting this sweet and delicate piece of video gold/coughing this up):

* – OTP ship = “OTP” stands for “one true pairing,” which, among your sadder, nerdier netfolk, means the fictional couple within a genre that is “destined” to be together. Mulder and Scully are OTP, for example. “Ship” stands for “relationship,” so someone who is a Rudolph/Clarice “shipper” is rooting for Rudolph and Clarice to get together and bump reindeer uglies.

omg fanvids lolz: “The Frug”, Rilo Kiley/Wonderfalls

Wonderfalls was one of those amazing shows that lasted one year because the network didn’t know what to do with it.  (also see: My So-Called Life, Nothing Sacred, Nowhere Man, and any number of shows I got really excited about, only to have them ripped away from me like so many dreams.  Sniff.)

I never saw Wonderfalls when it first came out, but it’s Amelie’s favorite show ever, so she’s gotten me into it.   The idea behind the show is that you’ve got this young woman who’s just graduated from college and doesn’t know what to do with herself, who suddenly begins receiving divine messages from tchotchkes.  Knick-knacks, if you will.  They tell her to do random things, and she does them, and winds up saving the day while questioning her own sanity.

The interesting thing about Jaye (the young woman in question) is that she’s a quirky and damaged person to begin with, who, for one reason or another, can’t trust herself enough to truly love anyone else.  Hence the following video:

Firenze takes full advantage of the unique editing style utilized in Wonderfalls to keep her video moving, and the song (by Rilo Kiley) is perfect for Jaye.  If you get a chance, seek this show out – it’s available on DVD, and fans of Pushing Daisies and Northern Exposure will find a lot to like here.

omg fanvids lolz: “Thrash Unreal”, Against Me!/Spirit:Stallion of the Cimarron and Final Fantasy

Against Me!, a somewhat political punk band from Florida, has finally broken through to the big time after 10 years of Warped Tours. Their new album, New Wave was awesome enough for Ben Lee to cover the whole thing acoustically, and “Thrash Unreal” is on the radio like every two minutes now. The song is about a woman who’s probably done too many drugs, who’s past her prime but still holds on to her glory days in the 1980s. Whenever I hear it, I immediately think of the 2002 children’s movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

You think I’m kidding? Check this out, via Newborn on YouTube:

It’s actually not a bad video, surprisingly; the dynamics of the song work, if not the lyrics.

MidnyteFox has this to offer, using clips from two of the more recent Final Fantasy games. MidnyteFox is one of those vidders who feels the need to put a thirty second long personal tag at the beginning of his/her videos, so once you’ve sat through a half-minute of hot Harry/Ginny action, you’re ready for the good stuff. I like the editing here, and MidnyteFox has a very good sense of movement vs. song dynamics, even if the video itself is a bit fuzzy (a problem a lot of gamevids have, as the conversion blah blah iMovie blah blah different video codecs blah). It also features many pretty virtual people, as any good Final Fantasy vid should.
